Set within the historic surroundings of Crumlin Road Gaol, unlocked at the Crum – From Conflict to Conversation brings together three individuals whose lives were shaped by the conflict in Northern Ireland. In a rare and carefully facilitated discussion, a loyalist former prisoner, a republican former prisoner, and a former British soldier will share personal reflections on their experiences, the realities of life during the Troubles, and the paths they have taken since.
This event is not a debate, but a conversation—one that seeks to explore lived experiences with honesty, respect, and a focus on understanding. Attendees will hear first-hand accounts that go beyond headlines and history books, offering insight into the human stories behind a complex and often painful past.
Through storytelling and dialogue, unlocked at the Crum aims to create space for reflection, learning, and meaningful engagement. It invites audiences to listen, consider different perspectives, and reflect on the journey from conflict toward conversation.
Speakers
Loyalist Former Prisoner:
Colin Halliday was a former Loyalists political prisoner, released in June 1996. Colin has continued to be actively committed to working with community groups across his constituent area and indeed on a Good Relations basis.
Republican Former Prisoner:
Michael Culbert is a former IRA prisoner who spent 16 years in Long Kesh prison. He is a former civil servant and former social worker. He is now the director of Coiste Na nIarchimí.
Former British Soldier:
Lee Lavis is a former British soldier who served 2 prolonged tours of duty in various parts of the North of Ireland, he was also involved in several major engagements with the IRA.
